Silicone-based defoamer for sugar mill evaporators and distillery fermenters

Defoamers & Antifoaming Agents for Sugar Mills

Innovacorp manufactures silicone-based and ester-based defoamers for sugar mills, distilleries, and industrial water systems. If foam is slowing your evaporators, causing syrup overflow, or eating into fermentation yields, the right antifoam chemistry usually fixes it within one dosing cycle.

Why Foam Control Matters in Sugar Processing

Foam is not just a cosmetic problem. In cane juice extraction and clarification, foam traps air and reduces heat transfer. In multiple-effect evaporators (MEE), foam-over means syrup losses, floor spills, and unplanned downtime. In distillery fermenters, foam blocks headspace and lowers ethanol yield. Anyone who has worked a crushing season knows that a foaming evaporator can cost more than the defoamer itself.

Where Our Defoamers Are Used

  • Cane juice extraction: foam control during milling and clarification.
  • Evaporators & crystallizers: preventing foam-over losses in multi-effect evaporators and pans.
  • Distillery fermentation: foam management in fermenters to protect ethanol yield.
  • Effluent treatment (ETP): surface foam control at aeration tanks and discharge points.
  • Industrial water systems: cooling tower and process water foam where surfactants build up.

Types We Manufacture

  • Silicone-based defoamers: fast knockdown, suitable for high-temperature evaporator service.
  • Non-silicone (ester-based) defoamers: preferred where silicone carryover is a concern in downstream processing.
  • Food-contact grade options: formulations designed for indirect food-contact applications; final grade confirmed against the specific standard your plant requires.

Final specification is confirmed after a lab trial against your process conditions.

Application and Dosage

Dosage depends on foam severity, temperature, and the sugar stream being treated. Typical starting ranges:

  • Cane juice / clarification: 5–20 ppm on juice.
  • Evaporators (MEE): 10–50 ppm on syrup solids; confirm on plant trial.
  • Distillery fermenters: 0.1–0.5 ml per litre of mash, adjusted to foam profile.
  • ETP aeration tanks: 1–5 ppm on influent flow.

These are starting points. Our technical team works with your process engineers to fix the actual dose after a plant trial.

Packing

  • 35 kg HDPE carboys
  • 200 kg HDPE drums
  • 1000 kg IBC tanks

Key Benefits

  • Helps reduce syrup and juice losses caused by foam-over.
  • Supports higher vessel loading by controlling the foam head.
  • Reduces floor spills and improves plant hygiene.
  • Concentrated formulations keep dosage low, which supports cost efficiency.
  • Works across high-temperature evaporator service and ambient fermentation service.

Technical Support

Foam problems are rarely solved by a catalogue number. We work with your process engineers to select the right chemistry — silicone or non-silicone — and to fix the dose on your actual stream. Plant trial support is available PAN India.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the difference between a defoamer and an antifoam?

A defoamer knocks down foam that has already formed. An antifoam prevents foam from forming in the first place. Most of our products do both, which is why we usually call them defoamer-antifoam combinations.

2. Which defoamer is suitable for sugar evaporators?

Silicone-based defoamers are the usual choice for high-temperature multiple-effect evaporators because they hold up under heat. Where silicone carryover is a concern, a non-silicone ester-based grade is preferred.

3. Can I use the same defoamer in distillery fermentation and ETP?

Not always. Fermentation needs a grade that will not affect yeast activity, while ETP foam is mostly surfactant-driven and responds to different chemistry. We usually recommend two different grades for the two streams.

4. What dosage should I start with?

Start with the range given in the Application and Dosage section above, then confirm on a plant trial. Final dose depends on foam severity, temperature, and the specific stream.
