A sludge conditioner does one job in a wastewater plant: it makes the sludge release its water. The sludge from a biological ETP or STP is mostly water — typically 97–99% — and the dewatering equipment (filter press, belt press or decanter centrifuge) can only remove so much of it. What the conditioner does is bind the fine sludge solids into larger, stronger flocs that release the bound water more easily, so the cake comes out drier and the filtrate comes out clearer. The result is a lower sludge volume, a lower disposal cost and a more stable dewatering cycle. Innovacorp manufactures and supplies sludge conditioners for ETP and STP plants in Nepal — polymer-based dewatering aids — selected on the sludge character and the dewatering equipment, not on a fixed catalogue grade.
Gravity settling in the clarifier removes the bulk of the water, but it leaves the sludge at 97–99% water content. The dewatering equipment removes more, but only if the sludge is conditioned first:
The conditioner is dosed into the sludge line ahead of the dewatering equipment. The dose and the polymer charge are set on a jar test on the actual sludge — not on a fixed figure from a catalogue. The flocculant page covers the wider flocculant programme, which includes the clarifier flocculant — a different selection basis from the sludge conditioner.
| Mechanism | What it does | Effect on dewatering |
|---|---|---|
| Charge neutralisation | Neutralises the negative charge on the sludge particles. | The particles can come together instead of repelling each other. |
| Bridging | The long polymer chain binds multiple particles into a single floc. | Larger, stronger flocs that the filter cloth retains. |
| Water release | The floc structure releases the water that was bound in the sludge matrix. | A drier cake and a clearer filtrate. |
The polymer charge (cationic, anionic or non-ionic) is selected on the sludge character. A biological sludge from an ETP is typically negatively charged, so a cationic polymer is the common choice. A mineral sludge may need a different charge. The jar test on the actual sludge is what confirms the choice.
| Product form | Where it is used | Typical dose |
|---|---|---|
| Powder sludge conditioner (cationic / anionic / non-ionic) | The standard form — dissolved in a make-up tank and dosed as a dilute solution. | Set on the jar test and the sludge character. |
| Emulsion sludge conditioner (where applicable) | Where the plant prefers a liquid product and the storage space is limited. | Set on the jar test and the sludge character. |
The exact product form and dose are confirmed after a jar test on the sludge. We do not recommend a fixed package — the sludge character and the dewatering equipment decide.
Grade-wise technical data — appearance, molecular weight, charge density, dissolution time and shelf life — is shared as a TDS on request for the specific product under consideration. Final specification is confirmed against the product TDS before dispatch.
Dose is set on the sludge character and the dewatering equipment, not a fixed figure per tonne. Working reference approaches for Nepal plants:
These are starting approaches. The working dose is confirmed from your jar test and the TDS for the product. Our team reviews the dosing plan with your plant engineer before the first charge.
Standard industrial packing; pack sizes on request.
For ETP and STP plants in Nepal, we review your jar test data, go through the product selection with your plant engineer, and review the dosing and preparation plan before the first charge. If the cake dryness, the filtrate clarity or the dewatering cycle time starts drifting, call us — we will look at the operating data with you. The defoamer page covers the foam side of the ETP, which is a separate programme. TDS is shared on request.
A sludge conditioner is a polymeric dewatering aid dosed into the sludge before the dewatering equipment — filter press, belt press or decanter centrifuge. It binds the fine sludge solids into larger, stronger flocs that release the bound water more easily. The result is a drier cake, a clearer filtrate and a lower sludge volume. The dose and the polymer charge are set on a jar test on the actual sludge, not on a fixed catalogue grade.
A sludge conditioner is a flocculant used specifically at the sludge dewatering stage — after the biological treatment and the thickening step. A general flocculant may be used at the primary clarifier, the secondary clarifier or the sludge dewatering stage. The chemistry is similar (polyacrylamide based), but the grade is selected on the sludge character and the dewatering equipment, which is a different selection basis from the clarifier flocculant.
Dose is set on the sludge character — the suspended solids concentration, the charge demand, the organic content and the dewatering equipment. The conditioner is dosed into the sludge line ahead of the dewatering equipment, with the dose adjusted as the sludge character changes through the season. Working ranges are confirmed from a jar test and the TDS for the grade.
Store the powder in the original container, in a cool, dry, ventilated area away from direct sunlight and moisture. Prepare the working solution in a clean tank with gentle agitation, and use it within the recommended shelf life of the solution — the polymer degrades over time if left standing. Follow the handling guidance on the TDS.
Send us your jar test data — suspended solids concentration, charge demand, organic content and dewatering equipment type — along with the sludge characterisation, and we will suggest the product form and a working dose range for your plant. Call +91-9312871070.
